The First Commandment of Saint Barbara’s
“You shall attend the liturgical services regularly, and on time!”
One of the great tragedies of modern Christianity is the idea that you do not need to attend the liturgical services to be a good Christian. Somehow it has become the popular belief that you do not need the Church (or the priest) in order to worship God and be saved – you only need to be a “spiritual” person who believes in Jesus. Whereas Orthodoxy has always maintained that personal and private prayer is important, the Church has also maintained that corporate prayer is more important! Canon LXXX of the Quinisext Council in 692 A. D. clearly states that, “… if any of those who are enumerated in the list of the clergy, or a layman, has no very grave necessity nor difficult business so as to keep him from church for a very long time, but being in town does not go to church on three consecutive Sundays — three weeks — if he is a cleric let him be deposed, but if a layman let him be cut off.”
Few question that it is Christ who saves – that was the purpose of His Incarnation, Crucifixion and Resurrection. However, before He ascended to the right hand of God the Father, He also established His Church here on earth. As Orthodox Christians, we believe that we are that Church! Christ dispenses salvation through His Church, using the priests as His instruments. You have heard many times that the Church is a hospital: Christ is the Physician who heals the sick – sometimes through medication, sometimes through difficult surgery. However, if we do not come to the hospital, we cannot be healed.
Some may argue that the Bible is all one needs in order to receive instruction from God. However, we cannot ignore the fact that the Bible came from the Church! As a result, one cannot interpret the Scriptures outside the context of the Church. God’s Word is a living Word – the Logos – and His instruction continues today.
Regularly attending the divine services is mandatory for all those who wish to be called Christians. One cannot say that he is a follower of Christ if he knows not Whom he follows. Neither can one maintain a relationship with God if one ceases to meet with Him (sorry, cell phones, e-mail and texting do not work). However, do not take my word for it, rather, listen to St. John Chrysostom:
“How distressed do you think I am when I call to mind that on the festival days the multitudes assembled resemble the broad expanse of the sea, but now not even the smallest part of that multitude is gathered together here? Where are they now who oppress us with their presence on the feast days? I look for them, and am grieved on their account when I mark what a multitude are perishing of those who are on the path of salvation, how large a loss of brethren I sustain, how few are reached by the things which concern salvation, and how the greater part of the body of the Church is like a dead and motionless carcass. ‘And what concern is that to us?’ you say. The greatest possible concern if you pay no attention to your brethren, if you do not exhort and advise, if you put no constraint on them, and do not forcibly drag them here, and lead them away out of their deep laziness.” -To Those who had not Attended the Assembly
Furthermore, when we arrive late to the Divine Liturgy, we bear witness that we have not prepared to receive the Holy Gifts. Therefore, if you have not come in time to hear the Gospel – the Word of God – then do not approach to receive Holy Communion – the Body and Blood of the Word of God.

When the holy Apostle Paul preached at the place on the Hill of Ares (Acts 17:16-34), Dionysius accepted his proclamation of salvation and became a Christian. For three years St Dionysius remained a companion of the holy Apostle Paul in preaching the Word of God. Later on, the Apostle Paul selected him as bishop of the city of

After the death of the Apostle Paul, St Dionysius wanted to continue with his work, and therefore went off preaching in the West, accompanied by the Priest Rusticus and Deacon Eleutherios. They converted many to Christ at
The writings of St Dionysius the Areopagite hold great significance for the Orthodox Church. Four books of his have survived to the present day: On the Celestial Hierarchy; On the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy; On the Names of God; and On Mystical Theology. In addition, there are ten letters to various people.
The written works of St Dionysius the Areopagite are of extraordinary significance in the theology of the Orthodox Church, and also for late Medieval Western theology. For almost four centuries, until the beginning of the sixth century, the works of this holy Father of the Church were preserved in an obscure manuscript tradition, primarily by theologians of the Alexandrian Church. The concepts in these works were known and utilized by Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Dionysios the Great, pre-eminent figures of the catechetical school in

Sunday Morning Coffee Fellowship
St. Barbara’s parish has been struggling with the logistics and parishioner participation in coffee fellowship following Sunday morning services. Providing coffee fellowship requires two key functions:
1) A person to prepare coffee, set up and clean up, and assist parishioners providing refreshments for fellowship.
2) Regular parishioner participation providing refreshments for Sunday morning fellowship.
For years we had the luxury and pleasure of a parishioner volunteer who came in early, prepared the coffee and assisted anyone who signed up to bring refreshments and then cleaned up at the end of coffee fellowship. Even with this assistance, in the recent past, the number of parishioners volunteering to bring refreshments had dwindled. To make things more difficult we lost our volunteer who assisted with coffee hour.
So we are in a sad state of coffee fellowship affairs. We all love to participate in fellowship after church services and I am sure we are all willing to volunteer one Sunday a year. So until a better solution is in hand we ask those of you willing to provide the refreshments for Sunday morning fellowship be required to:
· Advise Church office with as much advance notice as possible that you will be providing fellowship.
· Arrive early enough Sunday morning to start the coffee (9AM recommended)
o coffee takes 10 minutes to prepare and 45 minutes to brew
o instructions on how to make coffee will be posted near the coffee pots
o Set out the coffee, cups, milk, cream and sugar.
· Provide refreshments
o Snacks - This can be as simple or as elaborate as you please. Do whatever your budget and time allows. A plate of cookies is totally acceptable. The church does have platters and baskets, but you are encouraged to bring your items plated.
o Lemonade or Punch – this is optional but usually appreciated by the children. You can use the church’s punch bowl and ladle but you have to bring your own ingredients.
· Set up and Clean up
o Sometimes there are events the night before and the tables and chairs may not be set up. In this case you are welcome to either leave the hall the way it is. (parishioners will adjust to the room) or set up some tables and chairs if you prefer and if you are capable
· After people leave, paper goods and trash need to be thrown away.
If any of you have suggestions on how to better enable Sunday morning coffee fellowship, you input is welcome.
