The Church:
greek-church-night-web.jpg (12717 bytes)Nationally and internationally recognized for it's classic Aegean Island architecture, the church has been the focus of great interest since its "completion" in 1986. In fact, while the church and Orthodox Center were completed in 1986, a series of projects has continued to enhance and expand the facility and its capabilities... for both congregation and event clients. Indeed, the little church annually draws thousands of visitors, many whom simply drive up to the facility unannounced, becoming over the years on of Santa Barbara's "inside secret" visitor destinations.

Part of the St. Barbara story is the superb architecture and extraordinary location. The other part, however, is told in the church's interior. Here, the visitor will find a treasury of art. The dome and apse of the little church contain Byzantine mosaics, replicating 15th century art from a monastery on Mount Athos, known throughout the Eastern Christian world as "the Holy Mountain". The mosaics are done in the ancient manner, and are truly an awe-inspiring sight.

The church's doors and windows are similarly impressive, leaded glass doors and windows festooned with ancient Christian and Byzantine symbols, as are the interior ecclesiastical appointments, many of which are carved from marble and stone, or cast in bronze using the ancient techniques of "lost wax" casting.
